Gone but not forgotten: the 1994 "edit" of one of Babs' "rare" concerts so that it could be just one cassette/CD instead of the previously released two cassette/CD set -- aka 'Barbra The Concert: Highlights'
That whole cassette/CD thing is relevant because the ongoing #discardedcassette series is all about getting rid of the cassettes for which there is also a CD in the overall musical collection (because at some point it just doesn't make sense to have multiples of media ... especially when the kids nowadays keep everything up in the clouds).
As for the song to attach to this post to memorialize this release -- it's going to be a medley (who doesn't love a medley in a live show?) from an album/soundtrack that I currently ONLY have in cassette form (which means I only get to hear it on the rare [which I assume is the opposite of the phrase "on the regular"]) ... aka ... the songs from 'Yentl' ... aka ... "papa ... watch me ... flyyyyyyyyyy".

Gone but not forgotten: the fourth greatest hits album from Babs that came out in late 1989 ... and that now finds its way into the trash can next to the wilted basil ... but only because the CD version of this compilation release is firmly ensconced in the part of the vast musical collection in this house that is NOT being discarded.
In other words, this is the latest entry in my ongoing #discardedcassettes series and now I have to complete the task by selecting one song from said item to feature as an accompaniment to this post.
According to the wiki, there were only two new songs on it and although both were released, the first one to radio (which is how things were done back then) was special because it was only the third time that Ms. Streisand had an official video made (although a different wiki reference implies that it was only the second time ... which just goes to show you that you can't always trust the wiki). Regardless -- please enjoy the Michael Bolton/Diane Warren penned 'We're Not Making Love Anymore' at the link below/to follow:

Gone but not forgotten: Nanette Fabray.
(Which is also the way we close out this year's dead celebrity tune trilogy [for 2018 ... 'cause I'm not always the timeliest]).
As you may know, I loves me an obscure reference .. and so it excites me to recall one of Nanette's last TV roles on 'The Golden Palace' when she (spoiler alert) stole Miles away from Rose ... but it excites me even more to have found a clip from a Carol Burnett show that featured Nanette AND Sonny and Cher AND Carol and Harvey and Lyle to post below.
Oh no Nanette (not to be confused with 'No No Nanette') -- you will surely be missed.
UM ... *THIS* SONG ... FOR *ALL* THE WINS!:

Gone but not forgotten: Charles John Mahoney.
(Yep, it's the *second* of my annual dead celebrity tune trilogy [although super late as it's for 2018]).
Here's the thing ... I became a Mahoney fan back in 1987 when he was on the big screen with my fav Cher in 'Suspect'. Although I wasn't a regular 'Frasier' watcher, I knew enough to know that he was a superdad to cute Moose aka Eddie. (And, as such, I refuse to believe the stories that Eddie was replaced by his own son late in the series OR that Moose had a tendency to bite John every chance he could.)
Since this is all about tunes from those whom we've lost, I've searched the youtube and I've decided to include TWO closing montages from TV classics that feature the dearly departed: ER ('You're Nobody til Somebody Loves You') and the aforementioned Frasier ('On the Sunny Side of the Street').
You who taught us that gruff can still be lovable ... you will be missed.

Gone but not forgotten: Aretha Louise Franklin.
(In other news, it's (way past) time for my annual "dead celebrity tune trilogy" [in this case, for 2018]).
First up in this year's set is the (late) Queen of Soul herself ... a voice that only comes along once in a lifetime ... and that will live on forever despite her passing because of her amazing and prodigious body of work (including this underrated tune of hers from her "slumping sales" years that is kind of one of my new favorite love songs that she ever did).
Understanding the context that I was a child who grew up in the late 80's ... you whom I knew as Pavarotti's stand-in for 'Nessun Dorma' ... and as George Michael's duet partner from 'I Knew You Were Waiting for Me' ... and as every milliner's best friend much later in our lives ... I sincerely hope that you now know 'Who's Zooming Who' ... and that you always know that you will be forever remembered and greatly missed.

Gone but not forgotten: the 3rd live album from a certain Barbra which came out way back in 1987 (when I was but a sophomore in high school), and which finds its way into the trash can ONLY because the CD version of this particular once-in-a-lifetime recording (well, thrice-in-a-lifetime as of this release) is also firmly ensconced alphabetically in our collection.
Lookit -- it's a song that originally captured the sense of hope at the occasion of the end of the Great War (aka WWI) ... but as someone who's glass is almost always half full, I'm willing to keep it in my back pocket for election night in 2020 (or, heaven forbid, 2024).

Purposeful Memorial for Monday 12/3/18
Gone but not forgotten: Jen (Garbutt) Owens.
To be clear, Jen passed away a few months ago (in November of 2018), and I only found out when a mutual friend reached out to me randomly shortly thereafter one night on the Facebook. I also will admit that, except for following along on the Facebook later in life, my days spent interacting with her were limited to my time spent in Uniontown in 1992-93 when we all worked together at the Cherry Tree Cafe.
That being said, my heart still breaks to learn that, after a short illness, Jennifer was taken from this world way too soon. And my heart definitely aches for her mother, who also worked with us and who survives her, and for Jen's children, who were understandably apparently the lights of her life.
Back in the early 90's, as previously stated, Jennifer was the hostess at the restaurant where we all worked, and so I will choose to remember her with *this* smile (a pic taken in my Uniontown apartment at an after-party one night when we were all carefree and just enjoying every moment that life gave us) that she flashed to every customer as she seated then so many years ago.
Jennifer, for having the good looks of a professional model and yet who took the time to make each and everyone with whom you came into contact feel special in their own right -- you are most definitely missed.
IN HER MEMORY:

Gone but not forgotten: the 26th studio album from Babs, which found its way to the trash can NOT because I have a thing against Ms. Streisand, BUT only because I also have this release in CD format in the music collection.
As is tradition for this particular series, I must choose a tune from the cassette that is being discarded ... and, for this post, it will be her interpretation of the classic song from 'Into the Woods' that warns parents about how kids are always paying attention to that which they say and do.
Now there's not enough space to talk about how I was keenly aware of the behavior that I saw from my bio-moms and bio-dads ... so instead I'm just gonna say that Barbra knew that one who is trusted with the well-being of another should be hyper-aware and exceptionally careful about what is said. Children are always listening ...
CHILDREN WILL INDEED LISTEN:

Gone but not forgotten: Shawn and Caroline Brady.
Or, to be more accurate, Frank Parker and Peggy McCay -- who both passed away in the final months of 2018, one right after the other.
Those how know me best know that I've been a fan of the DOOL since college (although it's also true that I stopped watching on April 10 of 2012 [yes, I recorded the date] and that I keep on putting off returning to Salem but expect to do so one of these Days before they get cancelled). As such, I can still feel a little something something when the OG Brady couple leave the real world (and not just the soap world) for that great big fish market in the sky (you know if you know).
Those old folks who knew full well that a little fish chowder (and a whole lotta love) could solve just about any problem (from dissociative identity disorder [hey Kimberly!] to reappearing daughter-in-law back from the dead [hey Hope!], and even though I know, that when it comes to death, I have to understand that, "like sands through the hourglass, these ARE the days of our lives", you (both) will be missed.

Gone but not forgotten: the sixth album released by Bonnie Raitt ... that's almost as old as I am. (It was released in 1977 ... and I was released out my momma's privates in 1972).
I know that it's pretty old because that cassette was once white and has aged into that dirty yellow color.
I also know that it's pretty pretty old because I distinctly remember all but wearing it out in my very first car, the yellow gold Ford Escort, flipping the tape over to hear side 1 again when side 2 was done, in that generation's version of putting it on "repeat".
Finally, I know that it's pretty pretty pretty old because it's one of those releases where *every* single song is worthy of being featured in this post since they are all just that good. So much so, that I'm going to break with tradition and post TWO tunes in its memory (and by the way, you should know by now that the CD version of the album is currently in the massive music collection, which makes this cassette a duplicate, which is why this is in the trash in the first place).
As I said, any of the songs *could* be listed below, but seeing as how ain't nobody sings a sad sad song full of the heartache that comes from knowing too too much about human nature like Bonnie does ... it's going to have to be the ones that all about the sadness everybody in town felt when they found 'Louise' ... and the sadness that comes from realizing that it's finally time to pack up and leave a loved one as you sing your 'Opening Farewell' to them.
But really, go find this whole album and put it on repeat. You're welcome.

Gone but not forgotten: tonight's hamburger helper.
Also gone but not forgotten: Reba's 17th album 'It's Your Call' -- at least in *cassette* form, as it used to be when it was in the music collection before it found itself in the trash can tonight as the latest cassette to be "done like that" seeing as how the CD is *also* already in the music mix.
(To tell you the truth, I had thought that I had already featured all of the Rebas in this category, but I found this one in the bottom of the box tonight.)
Twenty six years ago, when this was released, I was listening to ALL the songs ... but the one I'll feature tonight is Reba's take on the Patty Loveless tune 'Baby's Gone Blues', 'cause who doesn't like them some classic country crooner who is "sang"ing the blues ...

Gone and almost forgotten: Maurice E Stallard, 69, and Vickie Lee Jones, 67, the two killed at the Louisville area Kroger by the guy who tried to bust into a black church but couldn't, so he went to the grocery store to do his killing. Their story got a little lost amidst all the other splashier hate crime news (as the Trump-minions have been super busy) ... but Maurice and Vickie Lee also deserve to be remembered for being slaughtered for buying-groceries-whilst-black. You will not be missed SO LONG AS we remember your tragedy as well.
Also gone and soon to be forgotten: my two former "friends" on the Facebook, who showed their true colors when they commented/endorsed the notion that Soros funded the #magabomber, just hours before one of the angry hateful murderous old white guys used the exact same anti-Soros attitude to massacre eleven Jews who arrived early to get the good seats at the synagogue. In my ignorance, I didn't know before that "anti-Soros" was code for anti-semitism ... but now that I'm so informed, I will have zero tolerance for anyone using my Facebook to advance such an agenda. You two, and anyone else who conflates conspiracy with truth, will NOT be missed.
Finally ... gone but not forgotten: Joyce Fienberg, 75, Richard Gottfried, 65, Rose Mallinger, 97, Jerry Rabinowitz, 66, Cecil Rosenthal, 59, David Rosenthal, 54, Bernice Simon, 84, Sylvan Simon, 86, Daniel Stein, 71, Melvin Wax, 87 and Irving Younger, 69. Names and numbers make them real ... and their stories are included in the link below/to follow for those who have been desensitized to the every day carnage and who need to be brought back into the reality of our disappearing humanity. As is customary to say in their culture, "may their memories be for blessings" ... and as I'm going to add, may the story of 97 year old holocaust survivor and shooting victim Rose haunt those who attempt to dissociate their allegiance to all-things-Trump from these direct outcomes of the "great" America they've created so far. For the sake of our collective future, you eleven MUST not be missed.
LEST THEY ALSO BE FORGOTTEN:

Gone but not forgotten: Popeye.
Warning: there's just no way around it. This is a sad one.
Popeye was the local homeless veteran who panhandled at one of the biggest intersections near our house. Seeing as how my "exercise" routine consists of frequent walks through my 'hood, up to 11 hours a week on six different possible routes, I saw him frequently. Previously, I didn't know his name ... and I actually don't think we ever made eye contact ... and I'm a total sh!t for that. I did see him often though, in his wheelchair, pushing himself backwards with the one leg he had left, shaking his fist (and, for a time, a crutch) at cars that drove past him too quickly. Sometimes, I'd be surprised 'cause he'd be up an alley, next to an abandoned building, catching some z's, just sleeping in his chair in the middle of the day. I don't recall him working a cardboard sign, but I do think there was an American flag headband ... and maybe a small flag that flew proudly from the corner of his chair.
Sadly, I now know his name because I stumbled on an article from the local paper that described his death in a late night hit and run in late September. Since learning of his passing, I now make it a point to look at another homeless guy I see frequently on my walks. He's often laying on one of the sidewalks nearby, but I'll be damned if I now don't look in his eyes as I pass. He's suddenly taken to saluting me ... and although I'm not military, maybe my tattoos and my give-zero-f#cks attitude makes him think otherwise, so I committed to doing my best to salute him back. And maybe, just maybe, #forPopeye, I'll learn that guy's name *before* I read about his death in the paper.
Popeye, to whom I dedicate the Joan Baez/Kris Kristofferson duet below/to follow*, and in whose name I am making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project tonight, you will be missed.
*So if you're walking down the street sometime
And spot some hollow ancient eyes
Please don't just pass 'em by and stare
As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello"

Gone but not forgotten: the greatest hits of Bette Midler, as packaged in the 1993 compilation called 'Experience the Divine'.
As a reminder, this isn't some protest about Bette's political tweets -- especially seeing as how I agree with the vast majority of them -- but is instead a representation of the fact that I'm discarding cassettes for which we also have the CD in our collection.
It is such a chore to pick just one tune amidst such a collection of greatest hits ... and although I have an affinity for 'Only in Miami' now that we live in the SoFlo ... and although 'The Rose' makes me cry upon every listening ... and although I remember Johnnie's last show when she sang 'One for my Baby ... and One more for the Road', I'm going to pick the melancholy opening track of 'Hello in There', for reasons I'll share soon in an as yet unwritten post ... and, because as the Marvelous Bette says in the opening moments of the link below/to follow ... "we're all here for the survival".

(Almost) Gone but not forgotten:
Columbus Day.
And I don't mean because I'm posting this around 8pm on the east coast on the second Monday of the month of October -- meaning that the so-named federal holiday is nearly over.
Instead, I mean that it's almost gone because in places not where I currently live, it's now apparently known as a number of other things -- like Indigenous Peoples' Day (a lot of places) ... or Native American Day (South Dakota) ... or Discoverers' Day (Hawaii). Or -- in Columbus Ohio itself -- they've done something trickier and postponed the whole "you get the day off" concept with Veteran's Day, a day when city employees previously had to work.
Unknown at this time is whether or not Uruguay and Belize (where it's called PanAmerican Day) are wrapped up in this controversy. Also -- I know I'm repurposing the sad Indian from the pollution commercials of the 70's in the picture accompanying this post, but I'm figuring that he can cry for all kinds of things (up to and including smallpox blankets).
That which taught me the part of the story of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria that didn't involve all the slavery and genocide and "violence, deprivation and disease", as referenced by Presidential Proclamation from the previous office-holder ... once you get removed nationally (which is certainly not expected until after we experience our own regime change here in the US), you will be missed.

Gone but not forgotten: the debut album from the late mega-philanthropist Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou -- or, as you probably know him, George Michael. (Unless you're of a certain age, and then you know him as DJ James K's godfather.)
Remember, this isn't in any way meant to be disrespectful to the soulful chanteur -- it's just that the CD version of this release is also in the music collection, so it's time to purge the 80's music technology.
As for the tune to accompany this post? I'll pick the one released in October of 31 years ago (1987 for those of you who suck at math) ... and if you don't know which one that is, then let me yell at you: "WON'T YOU GIVE ME A BREAK SOMEBODY GIVE ME A BREAK NOW!" ... just in case you too are having a 'Hard Day'.
(BONUS song tonight ... you can see the Armour bag in the trash [we're having meatballs tonight for dinner], and so the song that is *really* running around my head this evening is the classic jingle for their hot dogs, which may or may not be politically correct in this day and age -- but could anyone really rhyme anything with big-boned kids?!?)

Gone but not forgotten: Chuck McCann.
Actually, he's been gone now for a few months, seeing as how this prolific voice actor actually passed back in April of this year. But hey -- I only found out about it when I watched the in-memoriam section of the Emmys the other night -- and by Emmys, I mean the Creative Arts Technical Emmys and not the main Emmys, because voice actors apparently don't make the main Emmys dead roll call cut.
Mind you, Chuck's *name* didn't necessarily stick out at me when it flashed up on the screen -- but the clip that accompanied his name sure did. In other words, he who first voiced the cuckoo bird that went "cuckoo for cocoa puffs" ... you will be missed.

Gone but not forgotten: Liza. Well, the live version of her. Or, even more accurately, the version of her artistic output released in 1992 as 'Liza Live (from the Radio City Music Hall)'.
Fear not -- Ms. Minnelli isn't dead (yet). It's just that this 5th live release of hers is also in the music collection as a CD, so the ancient cassette is being discarded because it is apparently healthy to purge ... (slowly ... one cassette at a time ... on a fortnightly schedule ... 'cause deep down inside I actually don't like to purge).
As for the tune to include with the post -- it's probably not a surprise that it would be a Kander/Ebb song, what with her affinity for their work, but the question is *which* one. And the answer is -- the passive-aggressive ditty about wanting to know and not wanting to know but really wanting to know when you've been cheated on ... and especially with whom ... featured in 'Sorry I Asked'. An emotional roller-coaster of a song ... with a big "burn" payoff at the end ... PLUS a natural timeline defying "easter egg" hidden at the end of the song tied to her 'Arrested Development' storyline years later (you know if you know)... what's not to love?
YOU KNOW WHAT MISTER ... BUSTER ... STRANGER?:
