sosaysTroy
Used in a sentence: "The rebranding efforts continue in the first week of the new year, which means the repository for all my randomness is getting itself a new name: sosaysTroy."
Once I fulfill one of my new year's resolutions and finally get on the twitter, that moniker may yet get an octothorpe in front of it, but for now, it's launched as shown in the accompanying image.
Also for now, it contains my content as of 1.1.17, but the old capcognition blog remains active as the archive of all that came before it -- over seven years of searchable content from 2009-2016. Over time, some (or all ... or most) of that content may migrate, but as of this moment, it's just a clean break over to a new brand. And note: my "short" story Lorem Ipsum, which was split off from CapCog a while ago, continues to live in its own dedicated spot.
As for the reasoning behind the switch, it's really pretty simple: because I want to and sosaysTroy.

Random TNT for Tuesday 1/3/17
TNT ... CHICAGO 1:
1 Had the baby been born AT the hospital instead of on the way TO the hospital, the birth would have been in the papers and the child would have been heralded as the first one born in the brand new year. 2 Instead, some other cute little thing received those honors that year. 3 And Maria was just lucky that the Uber driver had brought along his girlfriend for company that holiday night/morning and that SHE was a nursing student who dove in to deliver the baby in the back seat of the Chevy Cruze.
4 Maria's brother had certainly been no help. 5 He was too inebriated to assist, and moreover, too disgusted at seeing his sister in that position. 6 He was also dealing with his guilt at the fact that he was the reason that his sister was out and about on New Year's Eve in her condition in the first place. 7 Unless you considered the fact that she had always told him to call her if he was ever in trouble, which made the emergency trip to collect him from a bad scene at a party her fault after all.
8 At that moment, Maria was focused on Sharlene, the nursing student, who was guiding her through the delivery. 9 She wasn't thinking about her brother ... she was thinking about the fact that someone should be notifying the father that the event was underway. 10 If only she had known exactly to whom that call should have been placed, she could have directed her brother to do that instead of having him sitting outside the car, fighting back a little regurgitation action.
11 The previous April had been a hard month for Maria. 12 She had been fired from her job at the pharmacy once her affair with the manager was found out by the HR department. 13 Her boyfriend John had left her once her affair with the manager was found out by him -- but then again, his mental health medication from his PTSD had made their private times together extra challenging anyway, hence the affair. 14 That stranger she had met at that bar that night when she went out to get drunk and forget all her problems was a nice enough distraction, but they hadn't exchanged numbers. 15 On top of all of that, the rent had been due, and creepy Mr. Kissinger had accepted affection in exchange for a discount.
16 April had been a hard month indeed, but Maria had no regrets. 17 She was a survivor, and she had been for years -- even long before her mother Maggie's death from cancer. 18 She had faced adversity before and she was never one to run from an unexpected challenge.
19 The immediate challenge at hand was to push when told to, and to breathe deeply in between. 20 As was her style, she rose to the occasion and she pushed her little heart out ... until she pushed her little baby out.
21 Sharlene's boyfriend offered up his jacket and the child was wrapped in it, with his nametag facing up. 22 He looked down at Maria's exhausted face and whispered, "for unto you this morning a child is born ... and it's a girl."
23 Sharlene, still in charge, commanded her boyfriend to get back in the driver's seat and to get them all to the closest hospital. 24 Maria cradled her baby, and despite the fact that the nametag read "Angel", she knew that the tiny hand that grasped her finger belonged to little baby Gabriella April.

Random Posting for Penn State 1/2/17
Here are 9 Nittany Nuggets from the bowl game:
1.) I do believe that was a record setting game on a number of levels ...
2.) And what a game to watch the points accumulate ... just sorry that the end result was that the other team had just a few more.
3.) Of course, I could have done with a few fewer interceptions.
4.) By the way, why is this the first time I'm seeing pylon cams?
5.) Based on some quick research on the interwebs, the comment above is a clear sign that I may only watch Penn State games and not much else ...
6.) So I'm guessing this means that Pasadena is the "shadow of death" ... to reference one of the two verses on Trace's bicep ...
7.) Can I just say ... if they had rebus puzzles in football when I was little (like they do now on the sidelines to communicate plays), I might have gotten interested as a young 'un.
8.) Hey announcerpeople ... how many times are you going to work the word "carom" into the reporting? Hint: it was at least one too many.
9.) I don't care what anyone else says. *My* players of the week were all our boys who took a knee while the opposing team player was getting checked out after being hurt on a play. I know there's no crying in the football, but a tear might have come to my eye at that point.
In closing, thanks to everyone who made that game super duper exciting (and with those words, you know now why I'm not an announcerperson) ... and here's to taking on the Akron Zips in ONLY eight short months over Labor Day weekend!

Random Memorial for Monday 1/2/17
Gone but not forgotten: Random Tune for Tuesdays.
According to the blogkeepers, there have been 374 posts tagged as such, starting with the very first one on November 3 of 2009 (more about that in a moment). But in 2017, Tuesdays are being rebranded as TNT Tuesdays and a brand new "short" story (told weekly) will join my other creative output in that space. There will still be music on the blog, though, since my ongoing discarded cassettes series is moving to Mondays starting next week and going every other Monday for many many fortnights into the future.
And there will be a few more rebrands ahead, also to be announced this week. Fun fact: this is not the first time things have changed -- Random Memorials for Mondays were once known as Random Musings for Mondays back in the very beginning ...
For now, though, let's end the tune thing exactly as it was started. Here's a reprint of the 11.3.09 post:
"So I was playing Cranium with the family recently, and I pulled the card for MC Hammer. I unwisely chose 'humdinger' as my choice because I thought I could at least get the repeated phrase 'Hammer-time' across. No such luck. I doubt I would have had much more of a chance with this song, but until today, I forgot he even sang this theme song. Wonder if it will be in the new musical version?"
At least 374 songs featured as random tunes (some weeks had multiples) that all started with this one, you will be missed ...
AND THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST SONG:

JUST ONE MORE ... act of kindness (January 2017)
JUST ONE MORE ... act of kindness.
Welcome to this month's new challenge -- because that's what we do now when we turn the calendar -- a challenge that somehow relates to my concept of embracing incremental change in order to empower folks (or just me) to stay positive and solution-focused in a day and age where problems often seem insurmountable, control often seems out of reach and apathy often seems to be running rampant.
Simple -- yet potentially profound. And needed more than ever in today's society. Yep -- the call to action is for us each to perform just one more act of kindness in the weeks ahead. Feel free to choose the situations as they arise, and hopefully by the end of the month, it will become second nature and just flow from you unfettered.
Here's what I can assure you: You'll feel better. The recipient will feel better. The world will feel better -- just one more ... act of kindness at a time.
Random Scandal Sheet for Sunday 1/1/17
What southern Florida is talking about this week:
Resolutions!
All the cool kids are doing it ... and me too -- despite me not having been a cool kid for a year or two. Without any further ado, here are my 7 for 2017 (and no, the image accompanying this post is not one of them ... it's just currently my FB cover and is just for "fun").
1.) I resolve to watch Days of our Lives again by the end of the year. I started watching regularly in college, as many do, and it was a part of my viewing habit up until Apr 10, 2012, give a take or time a two when I might have had a sabbatical. Once Stefano died last month (the actor did for reals, not the character, who was always dying and coming back to life later), I realized that it's only a matter of time before the people I knew in Salem are going to be all gone. Of course, I have five years worth of daily synopses to read first ...
2.) I resolve to get a better handle on my financial health. I'm realistic here and I know this is going to have to be in stages ... but the first step is always to understand exactly where it goes so fast. I'm not homeless or anything, but let's just say my defense against identity theft is to have a financial imprint that is like Henny Youngman's wife -- take it, please! Expenses will be tracked and evaluated ... and things will get better.
3.) I resolve to work through my backlog of periodicals. I'm too embarrassed to say how far behind I am (it's not as far as the day I stopped watching Days though), but I'm going to speed read one a day until the five piles are gone.
4.) I resolve to have this be the year of the push-up. Last year was the year of the bicep curl (I'm up to 70 per arm at max dumbbell weight three times a week), and I'll be applying a similar approach for the push-ups: I'll be doing the amount equal to the day of the month for as many sets as is equal to the number of the month (i.e. starting with 1 set of 1, and then building up to 12 sets of 31 by year's end)!
5.) I resolve to clean up the trash in the front and side yard. Living next to the four lane road everyone uses to speed through town means that the littering is out of control. We've focused on the fenced in back yard and have given the front little attention. Heretofore, my attitude to the mess had been "that's why you can't have nice things in the ghetto", but it's time to take action.
6.) I resolve to travel, 'cause that's what brings me joy. Confirmed for February is the annual "chasing the Super Bowl" trip, this year to San Francisco -- and then Vegas for the 6th year in a row (courtesy of the annual work conference). Plus I'd like to see the solar eclipse when it travels across America in August ... and there are ideas for one or two more trips to squeeze in.
7.) I resolve to join twitter -- with my new about-to-launch brand (stay tuned)! I have no idea as to how I'm going to stay within that character limit ... but challenge accepted.
Here's to progress prior to the check in on July 1 -- my annual mid-year's day celebration that also always features BBQ.

t1a7n72: Have you downloaded the app as I requested in my last communication?
Troy: I did. I have it on my phone. But it doesn't seem to do anything.
t1a7n72: Click on the three dots in the upper right hand corner.
Troy: I get a menu of sorts. Letters and numbers but I don't understand them.
t1a7n72: In your day, it's still just a prototype. Is there a capital P?
Troy: There is.
t1a7n72: You need to find a doorway that faces north. It MUST face north.
Troy: Um. Okay. But you'll have to wait a moment. I have to figure out for sure which way north is.
t1a7n72: You must hurry. Our window ends at midnight.
Troy: One moment. Okay. I have it pointed to the doorway.
t1a7n72: Click on the P and you'll see a light illuminate that doorway. Walk through it, but be sure to keep a hold of your cellphone the whole time.
Troy: Walking ...

Troy: Wait, what!?!
t1a7n72: It's almost midnight. You must take action. But make sure you're facing north.
Troy: How do I know you're not catfishing me?
t1a7n72: You have less than ten minutes. I've contacted you multiple times. It's now or never. Come join me. Walk through the portal.
