What southern Florida is talking about this week:
... the mango harvest!
And this year, "harvest" might just be the right word. The first one fell just over a fortnight ago ... and then a few more got turned into a bag of pieces currently frozen in the freezer waiting to be turned into a few smoothies ... and *this* is the haul tonight (which will become two more bags to be put on ice) ... plus the tree still has about two dozen up on the branches.
Interestingly enough, this year's output is exponentially better than last year because of Hurricane Irma, which took out half of the foliage that was competing for the resources needed for the little mango tree. So now it's all about figuring out what to do with so many mango pieces ... so many many ... like almost TOO many ...
If I were my ancestors, I'd pack up and take the stash to the local farmers' markets ... but instead, we're just going to keep on filling up the freezer and rest comfortably knowing that if one of the many versions of potential apocalypses (apocalypsi?) actually begin, we'll have a food source (at least for the summer months each year) ... so there's that.
